I have worked with A.D.R. Bulbs for almost 5 years now, and my company has sourced bulbs with them for longer than that. Communication is great - from ordering, to deliveries, to follow-ups on final product. I love the quality of the product as well as the service. We plant nearly 100,000 bulbs and A.D.R. keeps the whole process easy for us!

Allium Tall 'Schubertii'

Ornamental Onion

Allium schubertii, commonly known as tumbleweed onion, reaches 12 to 24 inches tall, featuring 9 to 12 inch spherical flower heads packed with loose, star-shaped rose-purple florets. Blooming in late spring to early summer, its dramatic, firework-like blooms create a striking focal point. As the seed heads dry, they detach and roll across the garden, dispersing seeds as they go—hence the name tumbleweed onion. Thriving in full sun and well-drained soil, it is drought-tolerant, deer-resistant, and attracts pollinators. Its strap-shaped blue-green foliage withers as the flowers emerge, allowing the blooms to take center stage. Ideal for borders, rock gardens, and mixed plantings.

Fall Planting Schedule
Growing and Maintenance Tips for Allium Tall 'Schubertii'

Timing: Plant in fall before the ground freezes to ensure proper root development. Ideal soil temperature for planting is 60°F or colder.
Location: Choose a sunny, well-drained spot—poor drainage can cause bulb rot.
Depth & Spacing: Bury bulbs two to three times their height and space them six to twelve inches apart for optimal growth.
Soil: Maintain a pH of 6 to 7 and enrich with organic matter for better drainage.
Watering: Keep soil moist but not soggy during initial growth; once established, alliums are drought-tolerant.
Foliage Management: Leaves yellow after blooming—plant among perennials to disguise fading foliage.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to prevent self-seeding unless you want naturalized clusters.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring to support strong blooms.
Pest & Disease Resistance: Alliums are deer and rabbit resistant but avoid planting in areas with excessive moisture to prevent fungal issues.
Crop Rotation: Change planting locations yearly to prevent soil-borne diseases.
