Leucojum, commonly known as snowflakes, are spring-blooming bulbs that resemble snowdrops but grow taller and bloom later, typically in mid- to late spring. Their nodding, bell-shaped white flowers, each tipped with green or yellow markings, dangle in clusters from arching stems, creating a soft, naturalistic effect in the garden.
Two main species are cultivated: Leucojum vernum (spring snowflake) and Leucojum aestivum (summer snowflake), both thriving in full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained to occasionally wet soils. These bulbs are deer-resistant, long-lived, and tolerant of clay and heavier soils, making them ideal for woodland gardens, rain gardens, and naturalized plantings.
Their strap-like foliage emerges with or just before the flowers and fades by early summer. Once established, they form grassy clumps and return reliably each year with minimal care.
