Iris reticulata, also known as netted iris or dwarf iris, is a petite, fall-planted bulb that bursts into bloom in late winter to early spring, often alongside snowdrops and crocus. Its orchid-like flowers, typically in shades of deep blue, violet, or purple, feature bright yellow or orange markings on the falls, creating a vivid contrast against the lingering chill.
Growing just 4–6 inches tall, this species thrives in full sun and sharply drained soil, making it ideal for rock gardens, gravel beds, containers, and alpine troughs. After flowering, its grass-like foliage emerges and quickly fades, allowing it to naturalize quietly among other early bloomers.
Iris reticulata is deer-resistant, drought-tolerant, and well-suited to dry summer dormancy, echoing its native habitat in the mountains of Turkey, Iran, and the Caucasus.
