Scilla Siberica 'Spring Beauty'

Siberian Squill

Scilla siberica, commonly known as Siberian Squill, is a bulbous perennial native to southwestern Russia, the Caucasus, and Turkey. This early-spring bloomer produces nodding, bell-shaped flowers in intense blue hues, with 2–5 blooms per stem. The strap-shaped leaves emerge alongside the flowers, creating a striking contrast. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil.

Scilla siberica is extremely winter-hardy, surviving in Zone 2, and naturalizes rapidly, forming large drifts that return year after year. It has received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.

Growing and Maintenance Tips for Scilla Siberica 'Spring Beauty'

Planting: Plant bulbs in fall, 3 to 5 inches deep with the pointed end up. Ideal for naturalizing in lawns, woodland edges, or under deciduous trees.
Spacing: Space 2 to 4 inches apart. These bulbs spread readily by seed and offsets.
Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Spring sun before trees leaf out is perfect.
Soil: Well-drained, humus-rich soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Avoid soggy spots—bulbs may rot.
Watering: Water during active growth and bloom. Once foliage yellows, reduce watering—bulbs prefer dry summer dormancy.
Temperature & Humidity: Extremely cold-hardy (USDA zones 2–8). No need to lift bulbs in winter.
Fertilization: Apply compost or a low-nitrogen bulb fertilizer in early spring as foliage emerges.
Pruning: Allow foliage to die back naturally. Deadhead to reduce self-seeding if desired.
Propagation: Multiplies by offsets and self-seeding. Divide clumps every few years after dormancy.
Pest & Disease: Generally pest-free. Deer- and rodent-resistant. Good drainage prevents bulb rot.
