About A.D.R. Bulbs, Inc

A.D.R. Bulbs traces its roots back to May 12, 1946...

when Simon Ruigrok Sr., a Dutch bulb grower, established a small basement office in Wyckoff, New Jersey. Originally named Ruigrok Bulbs, the location primarily served as a U.S. distribution center for the farm until 1978, when the company acquired two local flower bulb wholesalers—DeGroot Bulb Company and George Alkemade Inc.—marking the transition to A.D.R. Bulbs, Inc.

As the business expanded, Simon Sr. needed new facilities and a dedicated manager for his growing American operations. He turned to his young cousin Walter, a skilled salesman, who agreed to relocate from Holland and oversee A.D.R. Bulbs full-time in the U.S.

By 1983, the basement office was no longer sufficient, prompting a move to a 12,000-square-foot facility in Bloomingburg, New York. This shift enabled A.D.R. Bulbs to expand its wholesale flower bulb and plant business, eventually adding a retail division alongside its bulk flower bulb program.

In 1987, Simon Sr.'s son, Simon Jr., took over the Netherlands operation and joined A.D.R. Bulbs, furthering the company's presence in New England. The 1995 acquisition of Leading Bulb Industries (led by Rudy Bonkenburg) fueled another wave of expansion, extending shipments to the Midwest and West Coast. Soon after, A.D.R. acquired Neal Bulb, a New Jersey wholesaler, and welcomed three new sales representatives.

In February 2005, Walter's son, Chris, joined the company, marking the entry of the fourth generation of Ruigrok family leadership. Continued growth led to a 2006 relocation to a 33,000-square-foot facility in Chester, New York, featuring 10,000 square feet of climate-controlled storage, ensuring optimal conditions for wholesale flower bulbs and perennials.

The expansion continued with the 2008 acquisition of the renowned Dutch bulb company Van Eeden Brothers, strengthening A.D.R.'s retail garden center presence across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Further growth came in July 2019, as the International Bulb Company (led by Jan Doornbosch) joined forces with A.D.R. Bulbs, cementing its industry-leading role in the Northeast.

The legacy lives on—October 2019 saw Carlo Ruigrok (Simon Sr.'s grandson) enter the New England sales team, followed in October 2022 by his brother Philip Ruigrok, together representing the fifth generation of Ruigrok family involvement.
