Growing and Maintenance Tips for Tulipa Kaufmanniana 'Showwinner'

Planting: Plant in fall when soil temperatures fall below 55°F. Set bulbs 6–8 inches deep with the pointed end up. Kaufmanniana tulips excel in sunny, well-drained spots and are perfect for rock gardens, borders, or naturalizing.
Spacing: Space 4–6 inches apart. For maximum early-season effect, plant in clusters of 10 or more—especially effective where their low stature can be appreciated up close.
Light: Full sun brings out their bold colors and helps blooms open to their star-like shape. They tolerate light shade but bloom more fully with strong light.
Soil: Provide well-drained, neutral to slightly acidic soil (pH 6–7). Avoid overly wet locations—good drainage is essential for long-term bulb health.
Watering: Water after planting to settle the soil. In spring, water only during extended dry periods, as soggy conditions can reduce flower longevity.
Temperature & Dormancy: Requires 12–16 weeks of cold (below 50°F) to form healthy roots and flower buds.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced bulb fertilizer at planting and again in spring when foliage emerges to support strong early growth.
Pests: Generally low-maintenance. Mulch or mesh may deter squirrels. Deer will eat buds and early foliage—especially in spring—so protect plantings with repellents or barriers in high-pressure areas.
Disease: To prevent Botrytis (Tulip Fire), plant only healthy, firm bulbs in sunny, airy locations. Avoid overhead watering and destroy any infected material—do not compost. Rotate planting areas annually and avoid replanting in affected sites for at least three years.
