Planting: Plant in fall when soil temperatures fall below 55°F. Set bulbs 6–8 inches deep, pointed end up. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot to protect their full, textured blooms from spring wind and rain.
Spacing: Space bulbs 4–6 inches apart. For maximum impact, plant in groups of 10 or more—the dense double petals and frilled edges create a bold, luxurious effect.
Light: Full sun promotes strong stems and crisp petal texture. While light shade is tolerated, consistent sunlight enhances bloom fullness and fringe detail.
Soil: Requires well-drained, neutral to slightly acidic soil (pH 6–7). Avoid soggy soil—double flowers are especially sensitive to rot in poor drainage.
Watering: Water after planting to settle the soil. During spring growth, water only during dry spells to maintain healthy foliage and flower integrity.
Temperature & Dormancy: Needs 12–16 weeks of cold (below 50°F) to establish roots and initiate bloom.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced bulb fertilizer when planting and again as foliage appears in spring to support strong growth and full flower formation.
Pests: Generally trouble-free. Mulch or mesh may deter squirrels. Deer will eat buds and emerging foliage—especially in early spring—so use repellents or fencing in high-pressure areas.
Disease: To prevent Botrytis (Tulip Fire), plant firm, healthy bulbs in sunny, well-ventilated beds. Avoid overhead watering, and remove any diseased plant material—do not compost. Rotate planting locations annually and avoid replanting in infected areas for at least three years.
