Phlox paniculata 'Orange Perfection' is a compact, mildew-resistant garden phlox with dense clusters of salmon-orange flowers accented by a red eye. Blooming from mid to late summer, its fragrant blossoms attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Thriving in full sun to light shade, it prefers moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soil and benefits from good air circulation. Ideal for borders and pollinator plantings.
Planting: Plant as soon as the soil is workable in spring. Soak roots in lukewarm water for 1–2 hours before planting. Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots, and set the crown 1 to 2 inches below the soil surface.
Spacing: Space plants 18 to 24 inches apart to allow for mature spread and airflow.
Light: Full sun (6+ hours daily) is best. In hot climates, light afternoon shade helps prevent stress.
Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil with a pH of 6.0–7.5. Amend with compost if needed to improve structure and drainage.
Watering: Water deeply after planting. Keep soil evenly moist (not soggy) during establishment. Once mature, phlox is moderately drought-tolerant.
Temperature & Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 3–8. Good air circulation helps prevent powdery mildew, especially in humid regions.
Fertilization: Apply compost or a balanced fertilizer in early spring and again after the first flush of blooms.
Pruning: Deadhead spent blooms to encourage reblooming. Cut stems back by one-third after flowering to maintain shape.
Propagation: Divide clumps every 3 to 5 years in early spring or fall to rejuvenate growth.
Pest & Disease: Watch for powdery mildew and spider mites. Space plants well and avoid overhead watering to reduce risk.
