Dahlia Collarette 'Mary Evelyn' (Ships in Spring)

Dahlia

Dahlia 'Mary Evelyn' is a striking collarette variety featuring rich, velvety ruby-red petals surrounding a delicate collar of creamy white petaloids softly brushed with pink at their bases. The crisp inner collar frames a bright golden-yellow center, creating a vivid contrast that brings the blooms to life. Flowers typically measure 3 to 4 inches across and are held above attractive dark green foliage. Blooming continuously from midsummer until frost, 'Mary Evelyn' grows to approximately 36 to 42 inches tall and thrives in full sun with well-drained soil. Its open-centered blooms are highly attractive to pollinators, including bees and butterflies, while the dramatic coloration makes it equally valuable in borders, cottage gardens, and fresh-cut arrangements.

Growing and Maintenance Tips for Dahlia Collarette 'Mary Evelyn' (Ships in Spring)

Planting: In spring, plant tubers 3 to 4 inches deep with the eye facing up, once soil has warmed to at least 60°F. Space 18 to 24 inches apart to allow for airflow and mature spread.
Location: Full sun (6–8 hours daily) is essential for strong stems and vibrant blooms.
Soil: Well-drained, fertile loam with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0). Enrich with compost or well-rotted manure before planting.
Watering: Water deeply 1–2 times per week, keeping soil evenly moist but not soggy. Mulch helps retain moisture and regulate temperature.
Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 8–10. In colder zones, lift tubers after frost and store in a cool, dry place.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) monthly or use a slow-release formula. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds.
Pruning: Pinch back when plants reach 12 inches tall to encourage bushiness. Deadhead regularly to prolong bloom.
Pest & Disease: Watch for aphids, slugs, and fungal issues. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering.
Propagation: Divide tubers in spring, ensuring each has at least one viable eye.
