Growing and Maintenance Tips for Canna Tall 'Durban' (Ships in Spring)

Planting: In spring, plant rhizomes horizontally 3 to 4 inches deep after the last frost, when soil has warmed to at least 60°F. Space 12 to 18 inches apart.
Location: Choose a spot in full sun for best flowering. In hot climates, light afternoon shade can help prevent leaf scorch.
Soil: Rich, well-drained, moisture-retentive soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0) is ideal.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during hot weather. Deep weekly watering is recommended.
Temperature: Thrives in 70–90°F. Hardy in USDA zones 8–10; in colder zones, lift rhizomes in fall and store in a cool, dry place.
Fertilization: Feed monthly with a balanced fertilizer or apply slow-release fertilizer in spring and midsummer.
Pruning: Deadheading is optional but helps tidy the plant. Remove spent flower stalks without cutting off developing buds below.
Pest & Disease: Watch for Japanese beetles, caterpillars, and fungal leaf spots. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering.
Propagation: Divide rhizomes in spring before planting.
