Camassia leichtlinii 'Caerulea' reaches 2.5 to 4 feet tall, featuring tall spires of lavender-blue, star-shaped flowers with yellow stamens. These hardy perennials thrive in full sun to part shade, preferring moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil.
Ideal for naturalizing, borders, cottage gardens, and wildflower meadows, they are deer-resistant and tolerant of clay, dry, and wet soils. Flowers open sequentially from bottom to top, ensuring a long-lasting display in late spring to early summer.
Planting: Plant bulbs in fall, 4 to 6 inches deep and 6 to 8 inches apart. Choose a site with moist, humus-rich soil and good drainage.
Location: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Ideal for naturalizing in meadows, woodland edges, or near water features.
Soil: Tolerates heavy clay and a wide pH range, but thrives in moisture-retentive, fertile soil.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist during the growing season. Camassia leichtlinii is more tolerant of wet conditions than most bulbs.
Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 3–8. No winter protection needed in most climates.
Fertilization: Apply compost or a balanced fertilizer in early spring to support flowering.
Pruning: Allow foliage to die back naturally after blooming to replenish the bulb.
Propagation: Divide clumps in summer when dormant, or grow from seed (though flowering may take several years).
Pest & Disease: Generally pest-free and deer-resistant. Avoid waterlogged soil to prevent bulb rot.
