Amaryllis Dutch 'Mount Everest'

Amaryllis ‘Mount Everest’ produces pristine white 6–8 inch blooms on sturdy 18–24 inch stems, with 26/28 bulbs yielding multiple stalks. Harvested in September, these Dutch field‑grown bulbs require a 10‑week rest period, so planting should begin no earlier than November 9th. They store extremely well, allowing us to stock and ship them from November through spring 2027. Not suited for Christmas bloom, they excel as spring‑blooming garden amaryllis and can also be used in controlled forcing by professional growers. In Zones 9–11, they grow as perennials; in Zone 8, provide winter protection or lift before frost. Expect flowering 8–12 weeks after planting with reliable performance for southern landscapes and cut‑flower production.

Growing and Maintenance Tips for Amaryllis Dutch 'Mount Everest'

Planting: Outdoors, plant in spring once soil warms in Zones 9–11 (Zone 8 with protection). Indoors, pot in late winter to spring for natural late‑spring to early‑summer blooms; not suitable for Christmas forcing.
Rest Period: Bulbs are harvested in September and require a 10‑week rest; do not plant before November 9th. Longer rest results in faster forcing.
Location: Choose a bright spot with morning sun and afternoon shade; outdoors, use a warm, protected area with good air circulation.
Depth: Set bulbs so the top one‑third to one‑half remains above the soil line.
Soil: Use a well‑draining mix; ideal pH 6.0–7.0.
Watering: Water lightly after planting; once growth begins, keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged.
Fertilization: Feed every 2–4 weeks during active growth.
Support: Stake tall stems if needed.
Outdoor: In Zones 9–11, bulbs can stay in the ground year‑round; in Zone 8, mulch heavily or lift before frost.
Post‑Bloom: Remove spent flowers but keep foliage to recharge the bulb.
Dormancy: After foliage yellows, reduce watering and store cool and dry for 8–12 weeks.
Early Forcing: Store bulbs at 55°F during rest, then start at 82°F in the greenhouse; temperatures can be lowered later. This method can produce blooms before Christmas.
Late Forcing: To extend rest, store bulbs at 41°F; bulbs can be held until April for Mother’s Day forcing. Forcing can also be done in unheated greenhouses if temperatures stay above freezing. Bulbs tolerate 28°F, but flowers do not.
